This page explains what data the IIT Kharagpur HPC Facility website collects, why, and how it's handled — covering both general site visitors and users of the HPC ERP System (the account/cluster-access portal at /app).
Website analytics (Matomo)
We use Matomo, a self-hosted, open-source analytics platform, to understand how this site is used — which pages are visited, roughly how much traffic there is, and general trends over time. Unlike third-party analytics services, Matomo runs entirely on our own infrastructure: your browsing data is never sent to Google, Meta, or any other external analytics company, and is not sold or shared with anyone.
Specifically, Matomo records:
- Pages visited and time spent on the site
- Approximate geographic location (country/region), derived from your IP address
- Device, browser, and operating system type
- The site or search engine that referred you here, if any
IP addresses are anonymized before they are stored — the last two octets of every visitor's IP address are masked, so we cannot identify or trace individual visitors from analytics data. Matomo also sets a first-party cookie to distinguish returning visits from new ones, which improves the accuracy of visit counts; this cookie is used only for that purpose and is not used for advertising, cross-site tracking, or building a profile of you elsewhere on the web.
If you'd prefer not to be counted in analytics at all, you can block cookies from this domain in your browser's privacy settings, or use a browser extension that blocks analytics scripts — this does not affect your ability to use the site.
Contact form
If you use the contact form on the homepage, the name, email, phone number, subject, and message you provide are sent by email to HPC Facility staff so we can respond to you. This information is used only to handle your enquiry and is not added to any marketing list.
HPC ERP System accounts (/app)
Registering for an HPC account (faculty or student) requires providing identifying and academic details (such as name, institute email, department, and your Faculty Advisor/PI) so that your access request can be reviewed and approved. This information is used solely for account administration, approval workflows, and cluster access management, and is visible only to authorized HPC administration staff.
- Passwords are stored using industry-standard one-way hashing (bcrypt) — we cannot see or recover your password
- Temporary cluster passwords are emailed to you once and are never stored in our database
- Key account actions are recorded in a security audit log, used only for administration and security purposes
Research output submissions
Publication and patent/copyright submissions made through Research Outputs are used to maintain a public record of research produced using this facility, and to acknowledge the National Supercomputing Mission's support as required. Submissions do not require your department, name, or email to be published.
Data sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. Data is used only for the purposes described on this page, and only by authorized IIT Kharagpur HPC Facility staff.
